The movie received plenty of great reviews and is considered by many as one of the best air war movie.

8. Sergeant York (1941)

This is the true story about an ordinary man (Alvin York) drafted in world war 1 regardless of his pacifism. Later he proves himself as one of the biggest and most decorated world war one soldiers.

Spielberg has contributed a lot to the war movie genre. One of his best movies in this genre is war horse. This is the story about a horse and his young owner caught in the mist of world war one. 

6. Joyeux Noel (2005)

At the eve of Christmas, the German, the French and the Scottish soldiers and officers, set on a far post of the Western front, get out of their trenches to celebrate Christmas with their enemies. This is probably one of the most underrated world war movies. Great story, great director and great acting.

The two best Australian sprinters are sent to fight in Gallipoli against the Turks. There they face all the atrocities and horror that follow war. Directed by the famous Peter Weir with young Mel Gibson in the main role this is one of the best world war one movies ever made. An absolute classic, no world war 1 movie list can be completed with out it.

4. Johnny got his gun (1971)

This is the type of movies that can shake your foundation like no other movie can. Johnny got his gun is the story about a young American soldier who is hit bad by an artillery shell on the last day of world war one. 

3. Lawrence of Arabia (1962)

Once again a movie based on a true story about a British officer who helps the Arabs in their fight against the Turks during world war 1. The movie was awarded with seven Oscars and is considered as one of the greatest ever made. Peter O' Toole is T.E. Lawrence, the British officer whose name is still highly respected among the Arabs. 

2. Paths of Glory (1957)

This is a Stanley Kubrick classic with Kirk Douglas in the main role. More than fifty years later the movie still sends a strong message and remains popular. This is probably the best anti - war drama ever made. As once Kirk Douglas said: "I didn't had to wait 50 years to know that paths of glory would always be good".

This is a low budget war movie from which one should not expect too much. Even though the game company of heroes is ranked as a cult game and as such enjoys high reputation the movie doesn't even come close to that. If the movie was released in 2012 it would definitely be on the worst war movie of 2012  list. Yep, that  bad, despite the decent acting crew featuring proven actors such as Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down) and Neal McDonough (Flags of Our Fathers). On the other hand the movie is made for the sole purpose of bringing the characters of the company of heroes game to the big screen. The fans of the game are the ones that will like this movie the most. Others, not so much!

Directed by the famous John Huston, the Red Badge of Courage shades a light on the fragile psyche of the foot soldiers faced with the horrors of war. This movie is a testimony of man’s ability to preserve in those moments. Audie Murphy who is a real life war hero plays the young foot soldier that has to deal with its fear while serving in a union regiment.

2. Glory (1989)

Glory is very powerful, moving and complicated movie. This is the story about the first all-black volunteer company that fought in the American Civil War. The heroism of the soldiers that fought in this unit was pretty much hidden from the public, mainly due to racism. However, the movie tells the story about the bravery of those soldiers and the humiliation that they need to endure from both sides.

Gettysburg is an adaptation to the best seller novel “Killer Angels” written by Michael Shaara with Jeff Daniels, Tom Berenger and Martin Sheen in the main roles. The movie tells the true story of the battle of Gettysburg, from the perspective of the key participants on the two sides. Many people regard Gettysburg as the greatest American Civil War movie ever made. G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

The sequel of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra premiered last week reaching number one in its opening weekend. This week G.I. Joe: Retaliation fell down to third place with $86.7M gross profit. Retaliation  features an ensemble cast, starring Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson, with Channing Tatum, Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, and Byung-hun Lee reprising their roles from the first film.

What to be said more about this movie than that it change film-making forever, at least when it comes to making war movies. Is this the greatest war movies ever made? Hard to tell, but it surely is one of them. No western director has ever come even close to what Spielberg did with this movie - to show the real face of the terror in war while portraying the lives of a small group of soldiers.
