Best War Movies of 2012

The genre of war movies is usually not characterized by many new releases, which is actually strange, having so many conflicts around the world. The year 2012 was no different than the previous it that matter, but still, there were enough releases to choose from the ones worth watching.

When lists that summarize the new releases during the previous year are made they usually start with the best first and the worst later. We are little different in that matter, because... well - we didn't have much choice. So we published our Worst War Movies in 2012 list first few days ago, since most of the war movies this year sucked. The ones that didn't suck though - and how few they were - are listed bellow.

The Front Line

This South Korean movie was actually released at the end of 2011 but it only now breaks through it's way to the Western audience. An unsettling armistice is being declared between the two fighting sides all along the front line, except for the place called Aerok Hills - a strategic point which both sides wish to capture before the new border is determined. The South Korean side is led by the Alligator Company, the best soldiers on the front, the only to have survived the worst battle of the war at Pohang.

Emperor

It's the period of American occupation of Japan after Emperor Hirohito surrendered and General Douglas MacArthur is practically ruler of Japan. He assigns General Bonner Fellers to investigate should the Emperor be punished for war crimes or saved.

Into the White (2012)

Into the White (alternative title, Cross of Honour) is a war drama based on actual events that took place in the Norwegian wilderness during WWII. A German bomber is shot down over Norway by a British fighter plane, which itself crash-lands. The surviving British and German airmen start shooting at each other but soon realize that they would have to put their differences aside if they are to survive the harsh Norwegian winter.

Zero Dark Thirty

Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) brings to screen the hunt for the most famous terrorist in the world - Osama Bin Laden. Hunt that lasted from September 11, 2001 attacks till the death of Osama by the hands of the SEAL Team 6 in May, 2011.

Lincoln

Surprise, surprise!... not. Arguably the best movie of the year, period. And even though it's not a typical war movie, since we don't get to see any war, the spirit of the Civil War hovers around the plot throughout the whole movie about the American president Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to emancipates the slaves while the civil war rages, so there has to be a place for it on this list. The movie is nominated for 7 Golden Globes, won the AFI Award "Film of the year", BSFC Award and so on. By far its the most awarded 2012 movie.
