The film is set somewhere in the Pacific during the winning days of WWII on the US Navy cargo ship Reluctant. As the end of the war becomes imminent the ship's chief cargo officer, Lt. Roberts, becomes itchy for battle, but the ships despotic captain, Lt. Comm. Morton, refuses to sign any of Roberts' transfer requests. Luckily for him, two of his friends - Ensign Pulver and the ship's philosophical doctor - are here to make his time on the Reluctant more bearable.
