It's 1942 and a Pacific island is divided by allied and Japanese forces. US Navy Lieutenant Sam Lawson is a Japanese language interpreter who - so far - has evaded any contact with the enemy. His commanding officer informs him that his leave is cancelled and that he is assigned to a British infantry commando unit sent on a suicide mission to destroy an enemy observation post. Though most of the squad members are reluctant about the mission, they find a way to gather some courage when faced with the Japanese forces.
