New York Times journalist Sydney Schanberg and his Cambodian colleague Dith Pran are covering the civil war in Cambodia. When the American forces leave the country, Schanberg has Pran's family leave with them, but he and Pran stay behind to continue sending news. They are soon captured by the Khmer Rouge.
