An Italian general planning to switch sides is imprisoned by the Nazis in German-occupied Yugoslavia. Criminal mastermind Rocca, demolitions expert and Irish Republican Army member Scanlon, forger Fell, cold-blooded murderer Durrell, and thief and impersonator Saval are offered pardons in exchange for rescuing the Italian General. Led by British Major Richard Mace, and assisted by Yugoslav partisans, the misfit rescue team is sent to carry out the plan.
