Raised in Montana, away from government and society their unorthodox father disliked, the three sons of retired Colonel Ludlow build a seemingly unbreakable bond. Everything is about to change when the youngest, Samuel, returns from college accompanied by his fiancée, Susanna. The eldest son, Alfred, soon finds himself in love with Susanna, and things get worse when he discovers a growing passion between Susanna and Tristan, Colonel Ludlow's favorite son. The bond between the brothers is put to another test when Samuel decides to  enlist in World War I and Alfred and Tristan follow suit to protect him.
