Young train engineer Johnnie Gray has two loves in his life - his fiancee Annabelle Lee and his train, "The General". When the Civil War begins, Johnnie tries to enlist but he is turned down because he is deemed more valuable as an engineer than as a soldier. Annabelle thinks he didn't enlist because he is coward and informs him that she will not speak to him until he is in uniform. When Union spies still The General with Annabelle on board, Johnnie has chance to prove he is courageous  by saving both of his loves.
