During one of history's most obscure periods, King Uther Pendragon is handed the mythical sword Excalibur by the wizard Merlin. After securing an alliance with the Duke of Cornwall, Uther's lust for Cornwall's wife Igrayne violates the truce and both Uther and Cornwall are killed. Before his death, Uthers thrusts Excalibur into a rock and Merlin proclaims "he who draws the sword from the stone, he shall be king", taking with him Uther's newborn son by Igrayne, Arthur. Years later, during a jousting tournament for winning a chance to pull Excalibur from the stone, Arthur pulls Excalibur and Merlin announces that he is Uther's son and King.
