It's the Russian Front, 1943, and the German forces are starting to retreat. Corporal Rolf Steiner is leader of a platoon and soon to be promoted to sergeant. Captain Stransky, the newly appointed commander of the squad, is a firm follower of Hitler, a careerist and an opportunist who wants to take credit for the military accomplishments of Steiner and the squad.
