During World War II when Italy invades Greece, a large Italian garrison is stationed on the island of Cephallonia. A Greek-speaking Italian officer, Capt. Antonio Corelli, is sent on the island to serve as a translator. He is light-spirited and has a passion for the mandolin and often he and his men - who have never fired a shot - engage in activities on the island such as festivals. He soon falls in love with Pelagia, the local physician's daughter, whose fiance is fighting in the war. When Italy changes sides in the war in 1943, German forces take over the island and shoot thousands of Italian soldiers as traitors.
